What is laser therapy?
Laser therapy is a non-invasive technique used for certain disease processes (IVDD, arthritis, etc.), post-surgery, and/or injury. Laser therapy uses a form of light energy to help relieve pain through the release of endorphins and stimulates injured cells to heal at a faster rate. In some cases, laser therapy may reduce a pets need for medication. It may also be used in conjunction with medication, acupuncture or surgery based on your pet’s needs.
What is laser therapy used for?
Faster recovery after surgery or traumatic injury Provides relief from aches and pains by reducing pain and inflammation Treats and relieves discomfort from common ailments such as hotspots and chronic ear infections
Examples of conditions treated by laser therapy:
Arthritis/inflammation
Hip or elbow dysplasia
Skin conditions: hotspots, lick granulomas
Otitis (ear infections)
Wounds, snake bites
Dental disease, Stomatitis
Insect bites and stings
Urinary tract infection/inflammation

Sprains, strains and fractures
Post-surgical healing and pain relief

What to expect at a laser therapy appointment:
Your pet will be made comfortable and eye protection will be worn by the technician operating the laser, your pet, and anyone else in the room. No other preparation is necessary. The hair coat does not need to be clipped prior to treatment. To administer the laser, the technician will focus the probe over the area being treated for a set amount of time, usually no more than a few minutes total. For some conditions, a series of treatments may be necessary before results are seen; however, it is not uncommon to notice some improvement after the first treatment. This may include reduced pain and inflammation, improved mobility, faster healing for wounds, incisions or other skin issues or simply increased comfort and relaxation.
Does laser therapy hurt?
Your pet may feel a gentle and soothing warmth, tingling, or no sensation at all. For many pets, laser therapy is very calming. As areas of pain or inflammation become more comfortable, any anxiety and tension the pet may be experiencing tend to fade.
What makes it even better is laser therapy is considered one of the safest treatment modalities available. There are no known side effects at this time.
